Dear Allies
Hi there! Welcome to our Guide for Allies. We’re so glad that you’re joining us.
Too often, sexual harassment continues because “good people” don’t recognize it, don’t know what to do (so they do nothing), or assume someone else will report it.
This guide is here to provide you with what you need to be an active ally and/or to help others be active allies. An ally is someone who may not necessarily have been targeted, but one who wants to support or help those who have been.
Real change starts with people like you stepping in and voicing your thoughts when you believe something is wrong.
We know how hard that can be. How easy it can be to brush off bad situations. How sometimes we believe it’s not our problem. How scary it can seem to speak up for others.
But if we’re going to create a culture of change, empowerment, and speaking up, the responsibility cannot solely be placed on the targets of harassment. We all need to work together.
It’s not enough for you to say you're an ally. You need to take meaningful steps to practice and act as an ally every single day.
When you're an ally, you will take necessary risks, leave your comfort zone, and be part of the larger community of people who want to be part of the change. That means calling out inappropriate or uncomfortable behavior when you see it, being a great witness, and comforting targets in need of support.
We hope that you can find ways to stand up for what’s right and be a champion in your workplace. Let’s rise up to the challenge and fight this together. Let’s be brave together.
With love,
Team BetterBrave
Note: Though this guide may be specific to sexual harassment, it can be used to take action against other forms of harassment in the workplace (including, but not limited to harassment and discrimination based on disability, age or race).
