The retail trade industry accounts for 13.4% of the EEOC’s sexual harassment claims. This includes department stores, grocery stores, florists, gas stations, office supply stores, and other retail stores.
Like the food services industry, many retail roles are low-paying and occupied predominantly by women.
29% of low wage women in retail live in or near poverty, 49% of all retail workers are women, and 55% of all low-wage retail workers are women
70% of Black and Latino full and part-time retail sales workers earn less than $15 per hour, as compared to 58% of white retail workers.
The Center for Popular Democracy reports that 18% of women have upper-management positions, even though they make up 60% of first-line supervisors. People of color, mainly referring to black and Latino, are delegated to low-level, low-paying positions. Furthermore, older and experienced employees do not receive benefits or long-term rewards.
